Sunglass Hut Goes All Freaky

Sugarplum had two birthday wishes this year. A new iPod (thanks Mr. P for getting her that one! You rock!) and a nice pair of sunglasses from Sunglass Hut. Anyone been in a Sunglass Hut lately? What the heck happened there? I remember Sunglass Hut as a kiosk in the center isle of the mall selling quality sunglasses. The kind you pay some money for. But not 500 smackaroos kind of money. Now they have a whole section of Versace in the $300-$400 range. They have the new line of Tiffany shades (gorgeous, btw) in the $400s. And Chanel's in the $500s and up. And people were in there buying them up! Oh, they had some Oakleys and Ray-Bans too, which are dirt cheap by comparison. But those were relegated to a side corner section. Now, I must say that I have always coveted a pair of Jennifer sunglasses by Tom Ford which are in the $300 range. However, I buy sunglasses at Target because I've accepted the fact that I lose them and scratch them and break them. I'd like to think I could be trusted with designer sunglasses, but so far, not so much. So, based purely on the fact that I can't have sunglasses like this, I was appalled. (The price of a shoe will never appall me. It's a major flaw of mine.) Sugarplum (who has had the same cheap pair for a long time) choose a terribly adorable pair of Dolce & Gabbana's that were mercifully under $200. I actually liked them best of all the ones I let her try on (step AWAY from the Chanel's...). Sweet! I told her if something happens to them, I don't ever want to know about it.

I so relate. My sunglasses are all beach specials - BOGO is my friend.

But take comfort in the fact that your girl looks amazing in those suckers...that's always worth a little extra cabbage, right?

Get this: I FOUND a pair of Vera Wang's. I held on to them for several weeks spreading the word that I had them. No one claimed then, so now...they are allll mine.

I'm an El Cheapo when it comes to Sunglasses. I just buy what works for me.

She looks fab and kudos to her for being responsible enough for expensive sunglasses at 19...I'm 35 and couldn't be trusted with them. I leave them places and throw them on my passenger seat in the car so they get sat on a lot and end up all wonky.

I had no idea you could spend that much at the sunglasses hut. I got a pair of cheap Vera Wang at Kohl's (she is designing cheap versions of her stuff for Kohl's these days) and felt decadent spending $30. Don't tell my hubby - although he did compliment them yesterday.

Maybe one day I'll spend that kind of money on sunglasses (like when I'm senile to not realize what kind of money that is) but until then I like my $16 NY&Co. pair very much. And I don't care if Monkey Man gets his hands on them and wants to wear them. One less stress in my life if I don't have to chase down a 3 year-old with $400 sunglasses.

She does look good in them!

I, like you, am Tarjay for sunglasses...among other things they never get lost when they're cheap. My husband goes for those low ball Oakleys ..and LOSES them.

I've gotta go cheap when it comes to sunglasses- I've never had a pair longer than a season. Although the Coach pair I tried on at Sunglass hut were kind of cute...

She looks amazing and I am sure she is soooooo proud! You are a verra verra goooooooood and generous mom...remind her of that next time she has a "teenage" tacky moment...! I use to go through that with my daughter, she would talk me into expensive sunglasses and a day later fuss at me about something she "didn't" have...arrrrrrgh!!!!
