When I was younger, I would grow my hair a bit longer so I could do ponytails (and sometimes extra highlights) in the summer.
Now that I'm *ahem* older, I keep it short. I love having long hair, but the swingy bob is what suits me right now; it looks better on me.
I just don't want Mom Hair, which a bob can easily become. I try to avoid it by having an angled bob or a stacked wedge in the back. I tried to change it up over the winter with bangs and that was a disaster I'll be paying for for another 8 months. Most days I tuck it behind my ears which I know momifies my do, but at least outside of work I try to look like I have a stylist.
BTW, I googled "mom hair" thinking I'd find some yicky examples to post and my top result was this, which HELLO! is as cute as can be and if it's mom hair I've completely lost my ability to judge anything remotely stylish.
Which could be true. But I doubt it.
Here is a list of 2009 summer hair trends.
Cuts:
The Cropped Bob
The Pixie Crop
Long Hair
Styles:
Flowing Hair (?)
Straight and Sleek

Milkmaid Braids (OH COME ON)
What is your summer hair style this year? Please don't do Milkmaid Braids. How do you avoid "mom hair"?

Extensive Footnote With Photos - Most Relevant To Nashvillians:
I get a lot of compliments on my hair (when I actually fix it) and many people ask me who does it. I looked for a good picture of my hair to post but I'm the photographer and there aren't many to choose from when you are the one taking the pictures. Most pictures of me look like this:
So here's my old avatar, which shows the hair well and as a bonus - I kissy face you.If you're in Nashville, there's a discount for you from my salon, Studio Gaven! They are running a "$20 after 2" promotion. Any first time client who books an appointment after 2:00 pm will get $20 off their total bill. If 3 of you mention my name (Amy Smith, and btw it's Jason Kennedy who does my hair), I will get $50 off my next appointment. Win-Win!
Studio Gaven is in Cool Springs, right off of I65/Moore's Lane. 615-503-9788. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday they are open until 9:00 pm which I LOVE. I've been making my appointments at 8 at night so I can go after the baby is in bed. (Kelly the facialist is also offering 50% off her 4-layer anti-oxident facial until July 31st.)
Go forth, Nashvillians, and mention me, and we shall both have amazing non-Mom hair.

I puffy heart your haircut and might have to take the kissy face photo in the next time i get a haircut. I don't have any earthly idea what to do with my hair this summer... or any other time of year for that matter. But I guarantee it won't involve milkmaid braids in any way, shape or form.
I've embraced the mom hair. I am the mom hair. I keep telling myself that once the kids are a little older, I will pretend to have a little style again.
If that's mom hair.. holy hell. It's adorable!!
Everyone thinks the short hair is mom hair.
I LOVE your hair. LOVE it. It's sassy and shiny and swingy and GORGEOUS.
HI
I like your short bob cut. It does suit you. It wouldn't on me though, i've tried it and i prefer long. I enjoyed reading your blog!
I'm not sure if this post is really targeted at the likes of me, but if I was a girl I would go milk maid.
Mmm.
I wish I was a girl...
JUST YESTERDAY I was having a conversation with my BRAND NEW (and only) friend in my new town. She has the haircut I want, and it's exactly like yours, but since she's the only one I hang out with on a regular basis, it would look odd to have the same cut.
So, I'm sporting the mommy-tail. Ironically, Steve and I went out on a date last week and one of the waitresses introduced herself and said that she lives in our new hood and didn't recognize me without a pony tail.
That wasn't humiliating at all.
She might as well have said, "Dang, you look good clean!"
Ah!!! I thought I was over all of my urges to chop off my hair and do a cute bob, but now they're back. I love cute, short hair. The problem is I never have time to style it. I admit I keep my hair long so I can wear ponytails on busy days. I try to add the cute little front (I cut my bangs and now I have to pin them back) poof, but not sure I get it right. To cut or not to cut? Such a hard decision!
Yay, milkmaid braids are in!! *gag* :-D
I have a bob right now - it used to be an angled bob, longer in the front and shorter in the back, and longer on the right when I did a side parting.
Then, applying really poor judgment, I let someone else at the salon trim my hair because my guy was booked solid. What did she do? de-angled my bob and added this weird layer in the back. Excuse me while I bang my head against the wall.
BTW, your hair looks fab and not at all like mom hair. Which a bob can totally be. Which is why I am never getting a bob again - that line is way too thin.
I love your hair! It's super nice and stylish! I only wear my hair down and long - sometimes with a bit of a wave, or I might leave it naturally curly but I love it the most when it's straight! When I'm with the kids, ponytail, without fail.
mo - You kill me man.
Amo - You kill me too!
Broccoli - Oh I know about the pinning and the headbands (only in the house!) of the darn stupid bangs. What was I thinking? I know bangs don't lay right on me. argh.
I would go long again because it is hard, and it gets harder as you get older btw, to keep short styles from looking like Mom Hair. But my hair holds water like a sponge and while my style is easy to do, it takes 30 minutes to blow it out just because it takes so long to get it to dry. Long hair means WAY too much time with a hair dryer for me.
I told my stylist that I wanted to grow mine out a bit, but I made her and the stylist the next chair over promise to slap me if my hair gets to "delusional" length (for my age).
I usually keep it longer for the summer so I can throw it up in a pony tail. And I don't care that I am almost 38 and wear pony tails with baseball hats ;)
Keeps me young...
Life - I heart the ponytail with baseball hat! The ponytail was something I WAY overdid in my 30s at work. It was easy, and I HATE spending time on my hair. Once I got old I felt I needed something more professional for work at least.
Otherwise, I'd still have a ponytail too.
I did the bob thing but on me it really WAS mom hair, and I missed my ponytail so desperately I actually had a phantom one for a while, like those amputees who still feel their missing limbs after they're gone. I wrote an angtsy poem about it and started growing it back out. Now I'm sort of in that Rachel-from-Friends stage, which is VERY 1996 but a necessary part of the process.
What I'm trying to say is, you look fabulous.
bejewell - phantom limb hair cracks me up! I've had that before when I've cut mine off too.
I actually like The Rachel and I wish they could figure out how to update it and bring it back.
I'd do the wide headband with the ties over the shoulder, with big sunglasses. Somehow I just envision you that way. The large-brim hat is also a very on-trend option. Don't grow it. It's fabulous the way it is!
Sent you a picture, but am going to be the voice of dissent. ;)
Um, I'm 46, I wear "milk maid braids" as they're being called. Except I don't look like a milkmaid, I look like a woman who grew up on the ranch and works her a*# off doing brickwork (currently) and likes to keep her hair out of her face.
Interesting, I never new there was such heated feelings about this. Nobody has ever said a word to me.
Good luck on finding the right style.
evenshine - Two looks that I adore! I recently found a gorgeous wide brimmed hat and passed it up. Probably a mistake.
Meadowlark - Your picture is adorable and you look perfectly fine. Also, I've worn braids in the last 4 years myself - for hiking and camping. For my personal everyday life, I'd look very silly.
Also Meadowlark - now that everyone's doing it you'll need to change in order to stay hip!!!
I have a pixie bob. I can't do a longer bob because my hair is so thick and wiry (I know, cry me a river).
i believe "Mom Hair" is really caused by not getting frequent cuts - the tendency to "let yourself go" too long. If you have very long hair, this is less of a problem, I think.
I have naturally curly hair which I try to straighten. It looks fabulous when my stylist blows it out. Most of the time it's kinda naturally fuzzy (as you know from the drizzle and humidity in Memphis!)
Can he do naturally fuzzy hair? I may seriously call today and try to get in late next week. Mama needs some highlights. I HAS ROOTS.
p.s. your hair IS fab
Hair is one of my fave subjects. I had the mom-bob in my 30's when I had 3 kids in 4 years. Then I reached 40 and grew it long again (with layers). I went all cougar-like. Sort of. Then it changed from straight hair to wavy. Now I can't make it straight very well. When I get it blow dried everyone stops me and raves. Which is sort of annoying because umm, 99% of the time it's not fab. So on my own I can't do it very well anymore. It is a little past collar-bone and I should get it cut some. Hubs has asked me 4 times recently if I am getting it cut. I guess I should.
Jamie - Thanks! (My hair was decidedly underwhelming in Memphis. Jason can't do anything about me being lazy. heh)
I know he could work with fuzzy hair. Let me know if you try him!
Michele - It's hard to do your own blow out! When mine is long a salon blow looks gorgeous, but when I do it - gah.
I read this post last week, and I wondered how to comment.
I have naturally wavy-used-to-be-curly hair. It does what it wants. I do don't do it, because I don't know how. My mom "did" my hair until 8th grade, I wore it short all through HS, and then, well I can't really remember.
But reading this post made me shape up and get it shaped. I don't know if it's "mom hair", but then again with a 22 year old, I don't qualify for the Mom title like you do.
At any rate, I can't do any of the styles you mentioned. Don't have the hair, don't have the skills. Your style is sharp and sassy, you are a lucky girl! Yours is not mom hair, yours is stunning.
