Texas Sheet Cake

Texas Sheet Cake

My mom has made this delicious cake since I was in grade school. Something I realized making it today is that it is really easy and fast - always a plus!

Texas Sheet Cake

The Cake

Boil in saucepan:
1/2 lb. butter (2 sticks)
1 C. water
4 T. cocoa
(don't let it cool)

Mix in a large bowl:
2 C. flour
2 C. sugar
1/8 t. salt

Pour hot mixture into flour mixture.

Mix in a small bowl:
2 eggs, beaten
1 t. baking soda
1/2 C. sour cream

Add egg mixture to flour/cocoa mixture.

Pour into a sheet pan and bake at 350 for 15-18 minutes.

The Icing

Boil in a saucepan:
1 stick butter
4 T. cocoa
6 T. milk

Remove from heat and add:
1 -one pound box (16 oz.) of confectioner's sugar, sifted
1 t. vanilla

Pour icing over hot cake, spread, cool, and enjoy!

Mmmm, Texas Sheet Cake!

Fun story - This is the husband's all time favorite and he has had it for his birthday every year. We got married and I got the recipe from MIL. Three years down the road, three inedible cakes, and I figure out she sabotaged me with recipe.

I finally mastered it, but I still haven't let go of that one :-)

OMG you're killing me! My mom makes a very similar cake and it's my favorite. Love it with a tall glass of cold milk.

Sheet pan? Like a 9 x 13 or a "jelly roll pan" (bigger and more shallow)?
