I usually buy my kids birthday cakes. My favorite thing is to have the cake designers at Puffy Muffin match the cake to the invitation.
But this time I just did it myself. I don't know what possessed me.
I was happy with it and Bear loved it. We had a "friend" party in the afternoon and invited just a few of his friends, including a new one named Braden. Then we had a family party in the evening. Since the cake was for the family party, I made sheriff badge cupcakes for the friend party.
The cowboy cake was a two-layer marble cake (the birthday boy was excited!), iced in chocolate frosting. (The chocolate looked too dark, so I mixed in white frosting to lighten the color.) I made the cakes in sheet cake pans so they would be large, and turned them out onto a cake board (you can buy those at WalMart). I covered the cake board in bandana print scrapbooking paper first, which I think added a nice Western touch.
I made sugar cookies in the shape of stars - small and large. The small stars were iced with white frosting and then sprinkled with either red or blue sugar. These were placed around the sides of the cake. The large ones were for the cupcakes (see pic above) - iced red with little silver do-dads on the point of each star. (Then I thought they looked like Christmas ornaments. My mom saved the day by suggesting an "S" for sheriff. Thanks Mom!)
PS: Yes, I realize you can see Bear's real name. But it isn't Googleable, so it's cool.
