Andrew and I read the pageant book together this month - so fun!

We have tried to read some of the Tomie de Paola Christmas books with the littler two, Legend of the Poinsettia, Strega Nona Christmas, etc. and we also have an out-of-print pop up Nativity book of his which they love.

I honestly wish there were more beautiful, meaningful Christmas books for small children, though. It is easy to get stuck between cardboard Nativity stories and cartoons.

I'll have to check this out for my little niec...

One I particularly love is The Christmas Tapestry by Patricia Pollaco. Though as one distressed Amazon reviewer noted, it does talk some about the Holocaust, so I suppose it might be problematic for some people's Christmas book list.

Basic story: Preacher and son buy beautiful hand embroidered tapestry to cover crumbling wall in their church. On the way home they befriend an old woman at the bus stop. When she sees the tapestry, she recognizes it as her wedding Chuppa. Later when the plasterer comes to fix the wall, he recognizes it as his wedding Chuppa, but he and his wife were separated in WWII concentration camps. The preacher and his family reunite them.

My father just got my children the book - The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus: L. Frank Baum (Author) it has the most beautiful illustrations and my daughter just loves it. We have been reading a few "chapters" a night because we have to discuss all of the wonderful illustrations for awhile! I highly suggest - I ordered this book for all of the Children on our list this year. Just beautiful!

Kate's two favorites this year (i.e. the last few days) are The Little Drummer Boy (just the lyrics to the song and beautiful artwork) and "The Latke who Couldn't Stop Screaming: A Christmas Story" by Lemony Snicket. It's really more of a Hanukah story, as the latke is frustrated that the lights and candy canes and trees he meets are trying to co-opt him into Christmas. It's wacky and silly.

Matt and my tradition is to listen to the audio book of David Sedaris' "The Santaland Diaries" on our drive to either parents' house on Christmas Eve/Day. It cracks us up!
